Pedicure: treatments, prices and duration
Pedicure is not one thing: there is cosmetic foot care for upkeep, and there is medical foot care for ingrown nails, painful callus or a diabetic foot. The difference decides who you should see and what it costs. Below is what each form involves and when you are better off with a medical pedicurist.
Cosmetic pedicure
Foot bath, trimming and filing the nails, cuticle care, callus removal and a finish with cream or polish: allow 45 to 60 minutes and 35 to 55 euros. With gel polish on the toenails it rises to 55 to 75 euros and lasts 3 to 5 weeks — longer than on hands, because toenails grow more slowly.
Medical foot care
Ingrown nails, corns, painful callus, fungal nails and the feet of people with diabetes or rheumatism belong with a medical pedicurist. They work with sterile instruments and can fit a nail brace or pressure relief. A treatment takes 30 to 45 minutes and costs 40 to 60 euros. With diabetes, part of the care is often reimbursed in Belgium — ask your health insurance fund.
How often, and what to do yourself
For ordinary upkeep every 6 to 8 weeks is enough; with complaints or diabetes often every 6 weeks on your pedicurist\u2019s advice. At home: cut toenails straight across and not too short — that is the main cause of ingrown nails. Do not attack callus with a blade but with a file, and moisturise daily; dry, cracked heels come from too little oil, not too little sanding.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a regular and a medical pedicure?
A regular pedicure cares for and beautifies. A medical pedicurist treats problems: ingrown nails, corns, fungus and feet affected by diabetes or rheumatism.
How often should I see a pedicurist?
Every 6 to 8 weeks for ordinary care. With diabetes, rheumatism or recurring problems, usually every 6 weeks.
What does a pedicure cost in Belgium?
A cosmetic treatment is 35 to 55 euros, with gel polish 55 to 75 euros. Medical foot care is around 40 to 60 euros per session.
How do I prevent ingrown toenails?
Cut straight across, not rounded and not too short, and wear shoes with enough room at the front. If it hurts or is inflamed, see a medical pedicurist.
Does gel polish last longer on toenails?
Yes, usually 3 to 5 weeks, because toenails grow more slowly and take less punishment than your hands.
