Hair removal: treatments, prices and duration
Waxing, sugaring, laser or IPL: the difference lies mainly in how long the result lasts and how many sessions you need. Waxing works immediately but temporarily; laser needs a course but reduces hair growth lastingly. Below is what each technique does, what it costs and what to check before booking a course.
Waxing and sugaring
Both remove the hair with the root, leaving you smooth for 3 to 5 weeks. Sugar paste is used at body temperature and pulls less on the skin, which is gentler on sensitive areas. An underarm or upper lip costs 12 to 20 euros, lower legs 30 to 45 euros, a full bikini line 35 to 55 euros. The hair needs to be about 5 millimetres long, otherwise the wax cannot grip.
Laser hair removal and IPL
Laser and IPL target the pigment in the hair root, so they work best on dark hair against lighter skin. You need 6 to 10 sessions spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart, because only hairs in the growth phase respond. An underarm costs 40 to 70 euros per session, lower legs 90 to 150 euros. Budget for a course, not a single appointment — and always ask whether the device suits your skin type.
Preparation and aftercare
Do not arrive tanned for a laser appointment: burnt or freshly tanned skin raises the risk of patches. Shaving is allowed and in fact needed just before the session, but no waxing or epilating in the weeks before — the root has to still be there. After waxing, avoid sauna, pool and tight abrasive clothing for two days, then exfoliate gently from day three to prevent ingrown hairs.
Frequently asked questions
How many laser sessions do I need?
Usually 6 to 10, spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart. Only hairs in the growth phase respond, which is why the sessions are spread out.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
It gives a lasting reduction, not an absolute guarantee of no hair at all. Many people return once a year for a maintenance session.
Does laser work on blonde or grey hair?
Barely. The technique targets pigment; without pigment there is little to aim at. Ask for a patch test beforehand.
How long does my hair need to be for waxing?
About 5 millimetres. Shorter and the wax cannot grip; much longer makes it needlessly painful.
What is the difference between laser and IPL?
Laser uses a single wavelength and works more precisely and usually faster; IPL uses broad-spectrum light and is gentler but often needs more sessions.
