Nails: treatments, prices and duration
Gel polish, BIAB, acrylic or a plain manicure: the names sound alike, but the technique, how long it lasts and the price differ a lot. Below is what actually happens in each treatment, how long it holds, and what to watch for if you want to keep your nails healthy.
Manicure and gel polish
A classic manicure — filing, cuticle care, optionally regular polish — takes 30 to 45 minutes and usually costs 25 to 40 euros. Gel polish is cured under a lamp and stays glossy for 2 to 3 weeks; allow 45 to 60 minutes and 35 to 55 euros. Always have gel polish soaked off rather than peeling it: peeling takes a layer of your own nail with it.
BIAB and strengthening
BIAB stands for “builder in a bottle”: a thicker gel applied as a protective layer over your own nail. It is meant to let weak nails grow out without adding length. A set takes about an hour and costs 45 to 70 euros; the regrowth is infilled every 3 to 4 weeks. For nails that keep breaking, this is often the gentlest option.
Acrylic, extensions and upkeep
Acrylic and hard gel are used to add real length. A first set takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours and costs 55 to 90 euros; after that you return every 3 to 4 weeks for an infill of 40 to 65 euros. Bear in mind that extended nails need upkeep: letting the regrowth run creates leverage on your natural nail, and that is where cracks start.
Frequently asked questions
How long does gel polish last?
2 to 3 weeks on average. After that the regrowth shows; have the layer soaked off in the salon rather than peeling it away.
What exactly is BIAB?
A thicker gel applied as reinforcement over your own nail, without adding length. It lets weak or breaking nails grow out.
Does gel polish damage my nails?
The polish itself does not. Damage almost always comes from incorrect removal — peeling it off or filing too hard. Always have it soaked off in the salon.
How often do I need an infill?
With BIAB, acrylic or hard gel, every 3 to 4 weeks. Waiting longer puts leverage on your own nail and that causes cracks.
What does a full set of nails cost in Belgium?
A first set of acrylic or hard gel is usually 55 to 90 euros. An infill costs 40 to 65 euros, and gel polish without extensions 35 to 55 euros.
