Massage: treatments, prices and duration

A massage can be relaxation or targeted work on a painful shoulder — those are two different appointments. Relaxation massage uses long, calm strokes; sports and deep tissue massage works deeper and can leave you aching for a day. Below is which form suits which complaint, how long they take and what they cost.

Relaxation massage

Long, even strokes across the back, neck and shoulders, usually with warm oil. A session takes 50 to 60 minutes and costs 55 to 85 euros; a short 30-minute back and neck massage is around 35 to 50 euros. This is the right choice when you mainly want to unwind — not when you have a specific, persistent pain.

Sports and deep tissue massage

Here more pressure is applied into the deeper muscle layers, often on one area: shoulders, lower back or legs. A session takes 30 to 60 minutes and costs 50 to 80 euros. It can feel uncomfortable during the treatment and you may be stiff for a day — that is part of it. Always say when the pressure becomes too much; pain you have to breathe through is too far.

When you should not go

Postpone a massage if you have a fever, acute inflammation, a fresh injury or a skin infection on the area. With pregnancy, thrombosis, high blood pressure or during cancer treatment: mention it beforehand so the therapist can adapt technique and pressure or refer you on. A good therapist asks about this before starting.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a massage take?

A full session is 50 to 60 minutes. A targeted back and neck massage fits in 30 minutes; deep tissue on one area often takes 30 to 45 minutes.

What does a massage cost in Belgium?

An hour of relaxation massage is 55 to 85 euros. Sports or deep tissue massage is 50 to 80 euros, depending on length and area.

Should a massage hurt?

No. Deep tissue may feel firm and uncomfortable, but pain you have to breathe through is too much. Say so immediately; the pressure will be adjusted.

Which massage should I pick for neck and shoulder complaints?

A targeted deep tissue or sports massage on that area. Relaxation massage feels good but usually does not release a locked-up muscle.

Can I have a massage while pregnant?

Often yes, with an adapted position and technique. Mention your pregnancy when booking; not every therapist offers pregnancy massage.
